Not that I would ever do this, ;) But would sand from the beach of Cancun work in a tank? Or would their be harmfull parasites in it?

chances are greater for pollution(even in cancun) of some type
and watch out for the mexican gov't,not sure as to the laws in cancun, but cozumel(17 miles away), it is illegal, in most areas of the island

I agree with fshhub,
I'd be very happy to go to Cancun and gather enough sand for a full physical and chemical analysis by The Ohio State University's School of Geological Sciences ..... providing someone out there is willing to foot the bill.
I imagine it would take about 5 days and 4 nights to perform this task.

I live in Minesota. I've went loke 7 or 8 times, and will be going shortly, like in the next month or two! Which is why I am wondering if the sand would be that hard to cure, or even worth messing with. I would probably just use a little of it. I went snorkeling. Tons of fish. I went in a spot that is free. Kind of like a "secret" spot. Even got a pic of a baracuda and a puffer and it's baby! Some wrasses too.

I went to Cancun and Cozumel. BEAUTIFUL water. Saw all kinds of fish. But the sand isn't "sand". I think it's fossilized shells and bodies of "things"... lol.
Cuba also has awesome water. I swam and got pictures of 5' long baracudas, 4' long parrot fish, squid. A friend of mine caught a hammerhead shark about 2.5' long ( we released it) Just pretty reefs, in Guantanamo bay!!

cancun and cozumel is ground up coral, it is finer sized grains of coral(if i remember right), but it is not silica but corals are their base
what it is is the parrot fish eat teh coral and so on and so on, for eons and eonsubtil today we have the white sands down there

ya know, thinking about that, being crushed and ground up coral, maybe it would not be the best thing to use, i had forgotten all about that until reading the post by bammbamm

When we wanted to bring pieces of beaches we've visited into our reef tank we did it with small shells, make sure they were clean etc. Now one of my hermits is living in a shell I picked up at Woods Cove in Laguna Beach. I was scared to put too much "real stuff" in.
Broomer I can name that sand in 2 days and one night!!!!!! ;)
