I'VE BEEN THERE!!!!!
Go to Xel-Ha. There is a big lagoon there that IS NOT captive, meaning, they don't block all the fish in to make better money off snorkeling. It is open to the ocean, and all natural. If you do the all-inclusive trip, they have a really good place to eat. My husband and I had our honeymoon there, and we had a blast. We snorkeled for hours. We saw HUGE fish, about 3 or 4 different kinds, including parrots. The smaller fish were stuff like Yellow tangs, angels, other tangs, wrasses, I can't even think of them all. BUY A DISPOSABLE WATER CAMERA FOR THE TRIP!!! We forgot to get one, so all those fish we saw are only in our memory.
GREAT place to snorkel. You can even go up the Mayan River, and see some brackish fish.
Dead coral, I got TONS of it! We went walking on the beach, and there are chunks everywhere. The biggest I got to bring back was about a foot long. Save some room in your bags for it! I just put the coral in plastic bags and put them in with my clothes. I don't know if they allow it coming back to the U.S., but it's just dead coral...don't flaunt it bringing it back to the U.S. just in case, is what I'm trying to say.
HAVE FUN, YOU WON'T WANT TO COME BACK!!

That was wierd....It didn't show anyone's reply for a minute.
Anyway, go to any travel agency, where they book trips, and tell them you want to go to Xel-Ha. Most agencies have a double trip where you go to Tulum, one of the Mayan ruins. (but you don't HAVE to do both)

I second Xel-Ha! My wife and I stayed in Playa Del Carmen a few years ago and spent a day at Xel-ha and it was great. We also bought a few of the water cameras and took some really cool pictures.

Yes, your hotel will know where this is. ANYONE will know where it is, it's as popular as Chitzenitza.

If Welma hits the Yucatan, and it looks like that is happening as I write, then you may want to change your vacation plans for next month. There won't be any vacation left to go to.

latest forcast has wilma making landfall close to Cancun. it is supposed to park over the general area for 24 hours dumping 1-2 feet of rain. Tidal surge will be in the 35 foot range and winds currently 150 sustained. There won't be much left to visit.
I'd cancel and make other plans.

Hurricane Wilma is going through Cancun right NOW, I just saw some live video in the Mexican news channels here in San Diego. There is some very strong winds, but I dont know what is the extent of the damage so far. So I would check everything out before going, if its in the next two weeks or so, I would postpone it.

Reports are that now Wilma is parking over Cancun. The eyewall is currently over the area and they just stated they will experience 140MPH winds for TWELVE HOURS!!!!!!! as the hurricane is still over open waters and just about stationary.
