candy coral

about a week ago i bought a candy coral. I was trying to put it in this spot i think it would fit perfectly into but i was nerous bc i saw these red and white thorn looking things on the stems. So i just set it on the rocks bc i read somewhere u shouldnt move them around to much.
Any idea on what the thorn looking things on the stem are?

everyone is asking that...i have a TERRIBLE camera and they i dont think u would be able to see them well anyway. Im gonna research a little.
