Canister filter for return

Has anyone used a canister filter (like a magnum 350) as a return pump from their sump? I have access to at least one of these filters relatively cheaply. I dont have the tank set up yet, but if this would work I'd probably grab it while I can
Thanks for the advice.

I use one as a pump to pump water into my fuge/ get watermovement in there. I modded an XP1'S spray bar and drilled more holes into it and placed it into the fuge horizontally so the spray shoots in all directions and keeps water moving and going into my refuge. But I dont rellie on it strictly to push water into the fuge because I dont think it has enough power to do so.

I use canister filters, period. I think you either you use a sump filter or a canister filter. You can use a canister as an addition for extra water flow and different media but not as part of a sump. A canister stands alone and is self contained. If all you want is the pump action, a utility pump is cheaper than a canister.
A refugium has its own pump as well.

the advantage of a sump is not having to clean it all the time like a canister
the advantage of a canister is less room, simple to set up and its very effective with proper maintenance
pick one or the other

however....
if you're basically getting this filter free or really cheap (return pumps are cheap) take all the insides out of it so you dont have to clean it all the time, then if ever need be you can throw some carbon bags in it to bail you out if something goes bad.... just a thought

Thats what I was thinking, I can get this magnum 350 cheaper than I can get a Mag5 or mag7 return pump. I was going to run it empty or with emergency carbon. The tank is a 55 and I have plenty of flow via power heads. I'm trying to figure out a way to do everything with 1 pump to save power and costs. Ill put more thought into it. I have so many different DIYs going in my head right now to get this 55 gallon up and running its not funny :)
