I'm not too familiar with the magnum but i did have a fluval a long time ago. You might need to prime it some more. The fluval had a little hand pump on top to help suck water in to prime it.

Are one of the valves closed?

If the intake was under water in the display tank and the canister is filled with water, it should take off.

i filled the chamber and stuck the (exit water hose) and the hose that water gets sucked into in the tank, i opened the valves and the water still just swirls around but dosent pump or suck or anything.

Is there a fill cap on the exit hose? I have a Rena and you must fill the hose (return one) with water, even though the chamber is filled. Now on the Rena they do not suggest filling it (chamber)with water, the priming takes care of that so it builds pressure.

Are you sure the connection to the intake is making a connection to the plastic, black intake fitting within the canister itself? When I was using the Mag 350 (stopped cause of the constant seal replacements and nitrate factories). Mine would do that when the intake fitting on the canister top and that long black plastic tube within the canister where not aligned. The pump works it sounds like, something is just not connected right.
Which tank is this for?

You can use any type of media for the mesh container. I used Cell-Pore, it's reusable and did a great job for me.

It should be able to self-prime itself as long as there's either a syphon in the intake or water within the canister. Did you check to see if the intake is making a connection with that black plastic tube in the canister??

yeah its a little bent in like an oval shape, so that might be the problem, id tried adjusting it and it started working when i bent the pipe, but then it snapped

so i siliconed it back.

Yup! That's why I could not stand the Magnums. They filter out well as long as you keep up with the cleaning. The cost to maintain them.. Not worth it IMO! I would take it back and get another or look into a small sump and return pump for that 75g. You can make a sump very cheap!!!!
