So I just got this tank for free. if you care to see it I posted under tips and techniques title: how to clean old used tank. they have an old canister filter with it, it has a blue sponge and carbon in the middle. I was tinking of getting a new canister filter and keeping the used wet/dry for a refugium (sp?) what do you guys think of brands/stage/UV Light? What is good and what is over kill?

well as far as canister filters go with uv lights i believe jbj is the only company as of right now that has a uv light built in to the canister. (could be wrong) but i have yet to see another one with uv.
as far as size goes the smallest one jbj makes is the model efu-25 and that handles up to 100 gallons

I have been looking at the one up from that, and there is one other I have seen, it is more expensive, but not made in the US, which makes me nervous as far as replacing parts.

okay, so again.. UV light any one running one? I have a nano tank now, this tank is large and going to be a whole new ball game for me I'm sure with lots of questions, should I get a new filter? or clean up and run the canister, get a new over the back and use the wet/dry box? I'll even re-post the pics to make it easy to see.

Are u planning on using liverock? What type of tank (FO,FOWLR, REEF), and what type of substrate? U may be going way overboard.

well,,, depending on how much sand and live rock u have,,, I think the canister is overkill, Just use the wet/dry and a protein skimmer, u can make a fuge if u want.
However, It does add more filtration, which is always good

interesting, they had an over the back filter, canister filter, and the wet/dry filter and took the tank apart due to cloudy water and algae problems.
I plan on putting 2-3 inches of sand and 1lb of live rock per gal. of water.
I kept all the shells from the bottom and cleaned them, got rid of the gravel. will clean the tank tomorrow.
