Canister filter.

I have had a big canaster filter running on my 75g aggressive tank for about 8 months now. Its the kind of filter that has the small hard brown balls. My question is do I have to change these or wash them?? How often if so.

also how often do regualr PC lights need to be changed?? They are 48inch 40 watt lights.

those are the biological filtration of the filter. you should never rinse them off because that will kill the beneficial bacteria that takes out stuff like nitrates. on the other hand i also think you should trash the canister filter all together and get a better filter.
