Canister Filter

I have been looking for a canister filter, and the lfs recommended the fluval for my 45 gal aga. I have seen the cascade brand that is like 30-40 dollars cheaper. Is it a good canister filter or not? Anyone that uses it, pros or cons would be great. Thanks.

imo canister filters with s/w not a good thing.
if you run it with just carbon only ok, but with filter medium (ie Foam Pads)will need to clean about evey 2 weeks and is a big pain in the a.. . work well in f/w but not for s/w.
i like eheim.

Always best to go with a brand people have used with luck. Never skimp on equipment your wallet and tank will only pay the price in the future. There was a post not long ago where someone tried to save some money by using a cheap-o powerstrip for his tank. In the end the powerstrip caught fire and he lost everything in his tank and I believe some fire damage to his house.

I am new to the hobby so I don't have a lot of experience to draw from, but here is my input.
I have an Eheim wet/dry 2227 that I run in my 37 gallon tank. It is rated for tanks up to 90 gallons. I absolutely love the way it acts like a wave maker as it fills and empties. My corals seem to be thriving with a more natural water movement and my Lyretail Hawkfish loves playing in the surge. That being said, any type of canister or wet/dry filter is going to be more maintenance because they must be cleaned often to prevent debris from building up and making your nitrates spike. My Eheim isn't very hard to clean though. It has a double tap connector that just pops off and lets you carry the canister to the sink. I was running the Ehfisubstrat Pro but took it out after everything I read about the media being a nitrate factory. I will be putting it back in this weekend during my weekly maintenance because without it my nitrates have actually gotten higher. I just make sure I rinse it often with the water I pull out of my tank for water changes. I also run ChemiPure every month or so for a week.
Good luck, just do your research and find what will work the best for you.
