Canister Filter

reef newbie,
I personally don't use canister filters.
IMO - They tend to need more maintenance than other types of filtration.
The more popular trend in reef keeping is to use Live Rock and a Live Sand, with or without protein skimming.
Canister type filters will trap wastes ( as they are intended to do ) and if not maintained properly, with a strict schedule of replacing/cleaning the filter media, can contribute to higher than desired nitrate levels in your system. Reefers, as well as most hobbyists, want as low of nitrates as possible.
Canister filters thus are normally not the best choice, although I'm sure there are some beautiful reefs out there that utilize them.
Anyone out there using canister filters want to comment ?

Coming from freshwater, I couldn't imagine NOT having some mechanical filter... I now use my old canister for my quarantine tank whenever I get new fish, and the LS LR and a protein skimmer are all I use now.

Used a canister filter on two FO tanks for many years. Never had problems with Nitrates. The Fluval filters and easy to clean. I'd keep them, but we bought a very large tank and they just aren't big enough. We are going to sell the two Fluval canister filters and are putting in a wet/dry. If I still had the 65 and 85 gallon tanks I would keep the Fluvals because they are good.

I use a eheim on my 125fo, only put carbon in it and use it to run my uv through it. I did use it for years on fo tanks with no problem, never had high nitrates just keep it clean. Good Luck

I have always used my fluval 304 on my 29g reef, i use chemi-pure in it.
I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<a href="http://photos.yahoo.com/cje0114" target="_blank">lordofthereef</a>
