I'm in the market for a good canister filter for my upcoming 46 gallon seahorse tank and a friend mentioned that she has a large Fluval sitting in her basement that is going to waste and offered it to me. As much as the idea of saving hundreds of dollars is appealing, I have to wonder - would that be a good move? I didn't know her when she was doing saltwater -all I know is that she was into it about 6 months and then shortly after introducing a new fish her whole tank died. She attributes it to her not quarantining the new fish. My fear here is that I could be asking for trouble taking a filter that was in a "diseased" tank, right? Granted if it's been sitting in a basement over a year maybe all the bad stuff is dead or maybe even MORE bad things have grown on it. I'm not too keen on taking any chances unless you all feel that I'd be safe. I mean, is there any way to REALLY disinfect and clean a canister filter and be sure it's 100% safe short of replacing all the parts and components?
