Canisters work just fine as long as you keep up on the maintenance once a month as you should. They run silent and can be outfitted with a spray bar to help with surface movement and free up the power heads. The different media that can be used is another big plus...lots of flow thru the canister.

if your not wanting the space usage of a sump then a good option is your canister...
I dont care for them because its allot more upkeep...but then again what in SWF keeping isnt, lol

You can just hook it up as a free standing extra filter...if you have a spray bar on the canister...or add one... you can increase the surface water movement...or vertically placed it will help overall water current. Hoses placed in the sump and it will clean the water before it returns to the DT.
You can load it with carbon to clear toxins from chemical warfare between coral, or just use it empty to give water movement, or fill it with white filament to catch just large particals and keep the tank clean that way.
No matter (unless it just runs empty for water movement) it will have to be serviced once a month to clean it up and replace media.
