Canister vs wet/dry sump filter

I wondering what the benefits of each are. I in the process of setting up a 55 gallon. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

wet dry: allows aeration and a place for you to put your skimmer.
canister: dosnt aerate much and you will need to get a HOB skimmer.
they both essentially do the same thing filtration-wise and your right on the cusp where I dont think it would really matter which one you picked. only I like the marineland canister much more than the rena.
