my canopy over my 20g has 2 65 watt pc's and i dont have a glass top, and run it with nothign in between most times, but i do have a piece of plexiglass that i can throw over the tank ( a little ledge built into the DIY hood) in a pinch! water has splashed on the bulbs while doing some cleaning, but they have never (knock on wood) popped on me yet!

I had to take mine off to keeep the temp down. I splash water on them all the time when I add water since I don't have a sump and have had no probs.

I have a bowfront 72g canopy with VHO, have had it about two months and asked this same question then and was told it was best to take tops off and they were right, the temp stays down and spashes aren't a problem.......

Halide lights should be at least 8 inches from the water IME to keep the majority of splash off the bulbs. You will always get some unless it is extremely far from the water. I would probably use a cover if you're only 3 inches from the top of the water.

Sorry didn't read careful enough, with pc lighting, make sure the ends are water proof, or else a fire could happen. If they are, you should be fine. Clean the bulbs of salt everyonce in a while and it should be good to go.
