Canopy

What's the real use for a canopy? Other than housing lighting. Could i use a canopy if i'm using a Penguin 330 Power filter? Just route the back to fit it or would that interfere with the whole purpose of it...............

on most canaopys the back is open so there should be no problem

I was gonna make my own........... So should i leave the back completely open or just space enough for the filter?

Depends on the type of tank and light setup...
If your doing a reef and have heavy duty MH lighting you may not want bright light 'glowing" out the back of you canopy, if so then just cut out for the filter...
If you DIDN'T have the HOB filter you could push the tank/canopy against the back wall and it wouldn't matter..
For FO tank with normal output lights the glow out the back may not be annoying...
Mostly personal preference...

Another good use for a canopy is to keep the "jumpers" in the tank. It sucks when you come home to a raisin fish. It also allows you to hide any equipment that you cannot put elsewhere, such as the penguin HOB.
