Can't figure out what I'm looking at...help please

Okay, I'm going to do my best to describe this and if you could please tell me what it is I'd really appreciate it because I can't figure it out lol.
I have this red ball sponge in my tank that is attached to some sort of shell. Now back when I had first purchased it, I had placed it between some rocks in my tank, pretty well secured. I've recently moved it to a spot on the sand bed right in front of the rocks. Every morning when I wake it up it has moved up against the glass overnight. It kind of leaves a drag mark in the sand bed...similar to the movement of a clam. It does appear to be attached to some sort of clam however I had always assumed it was long dead/abandoned. When I lift it off of the sandbed to move it back there is a gush of air blown back to the sandbed, sort of like what happens when my cleaner clam slams shut when startled so I'm guessing okay maybe it is alive after all. But, here's the part that's confusing me. Upon closer inspection there is what appears to be the tip of a claw? It opens and shuts and moves side to side but never extends, from a small opening in the side. I've only had cleaner clams and a crocea, none of which have anything even remotely close to this and I can't figure out what it is that I'm looking at. I'll try to post pictures, but it's really hard to get a clear shot. It's very small and stops moving at the slightest change in light/position. So what exactly is this sponge attached to? I'm guessing not a clam because of this little appendage but I've searched for different types of "shell" critters and can't find anything close to this.

Not sure if these will help much or not, I had to lay it on it's side to get any sort of a clear picture. I tried to show the different positions it opens/closes in.

Okay I think I answered my question. Still not sure what kind of "clam" or whatever the sponge is attached to, however from a picture I just found online, I'm thinking the little claw looking thing is a barnacle....now the question I have is it safe to leave it be?
