Hi all,
Okay.. I have had a SW tank for over a year now, but latley have come acorss the problem of red slime! the LFS gave me some chemicals, and told me to do water changes but it keeps comming back.. grrrrrrr!
When I test my tank for nitrates and nitrites and PH everything looks good. I have a HOB refugium and a 30 gallon Fish only with live rock. i just want a clean tank... can some one tell me EVERYTHING i should be testing my water for?? My emperor Angel is sick and i think it is due to water conditions... PLEASE HELP thanks so much! Oh and btw.. i have a killer pajama cardnal that i think kills every turbo snail i put in the tank.... so snails are out of the question..

+1 unless the angel is very tiny it is sick because it is stressed out.
The red slime is NOT algae, it is cyano bacteria and nothing eats it. It feeds on phosphates, it won't do any good to test for it because it will read safe levels, and the cyano is feeding on it, and giving a false test reading.
Cyano is also caused from over feeding and low water flow. The medicine the LFS sold you will not work unless you address the cause.
  • Siphon as much of the red slime out as you can.
  • Use a product called phosban or Phosphate-E to remove the phosphates.
  • Never feed more than fish can consume in a few minutes.
Be careful of coral foods, what the coral doesn't use becomes food for problem algae.
After dosing with redX or whatever you used, do a 25% water change like the instructions say.
Increase the water flow by adding more power heads or re-directing the ones you have .

I would kill the lights until the red slime dies off. Usually only tanks a few days but can take up to a week.

Killing the lights is a temporary solution and it messes up your fish's cycle. Plus, if you don't fix the cause (see Flower's post), it'll just come back when you turn the lights back on.

While you're getting the phos remover; tell the idiot at the lfs that he owes you money. A juvi Koran should sell for about 1/2 the price of a juvi Emperor. On 2nd thought, if he said it would be fine in a 30, he should refund the whole price and get a job at *****.
