So, of course, for christmas I got a check engine light to come on. I have a 2005 Nissan Sentra that I've already replaced the head gasket and a fuel pump on. I'm one more major problem away from scrapping the car...so anyways, I got a P0455 code evap emissions (large) that came on. Its not the gas cap - I've tried that already and the light came back on. Any suggestions of where to start??

P0455 OBD-II Trouble Code
Technical DescriptionEvaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)
What does that mean? This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
SymptomsYou likely won't notice any drivability problems.
CausesA code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system
Possible SolutionsWith a p0455, the most common repair is to:
Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary

For starters I am Master ASE certified as well as Toyota factory certified technician. We see these codes on an almost daily basis, but OBDII computer control systems will throw a 4055, 4056, 4057. Small leak, large leak, and incorrect purge flow if the gas cap is loose. Resetting the codes and flashing the PCM will do ABSOLUTELY nothing. If there is a leak, if will not fix itself by resetting the monitors. There are anywhere from 6 to 8 readiness monitors the system checks for emissions on a daily basis when all the given parameters are where they should be, and if one fails it stores in memory. Until repaired, the car will not pass emissions. You will fail the EVAP monitor. Well, down to it. I know on the earlier sentras as well as the 99-03 Toyota Highlanders when people check the airfilter the VSV purge vac line gets knocked off the plastic tee. Have someone make sure there are NO vacuum leaks. If you can not figure it out, a shop will do a smoke test from the gree capped evap diagnosis port. Do not let them tell you otherwise. My guess however is that when you had the head gasket replaced they did not secure one of the lines for the system and it has come loose. The first thing I would do is go back to that repair facility and ask them to look the vehicle over (given it wasn't a long time ago it's been worked on by them). The one thing I can tell you is do not go in there with a holier than thou attitude. We tend to take a personal liking to these customers and I can usually write them a 1,500 dollar ticket on a 20k mile car. Afterall, it isn't "the same way as when it left the factory" ;). Good luck and if any questions PM me.

HA, you like that huh? It is true though. I had a guy come in with a 2005 Tacoma with a 6" suspension lift complaining of a leak. I knew right away it was more than likely a power steering leak. When you lift the vehicle it throws of the steering rack tie rod angles and puts excessive stress on the side seals of the steering rack. He was under warranty but had a horrible attitude. After talking to my service manager and calling Joe Lacefield, our region service rep, we decided it would NOT be warrantied. So he payed 1100 for a new rack, 460 for labor and 95 for an alignment. The alignment was already off because of the lift and the tires were wearing due to too much negatice camber (tires tilted inward). So, being he had aftermarket super swamper mud tires, he spent another 9xx some dollars for tires, mount and balance. I also sold four camber adjustment cam bolts for 3x some dollars each. We are not theives, I simply live by the "if it ain't mine, I want NOTHING BUT THE BEST". This covers me, as we call it CYA (cover your ass) from any further problems down the road. Even then I let him know I would recommend removing the lift kit. Don't get me wrong now I love aftermarket. I have a 408ci LS1 stroker motor in my 01 WS6 as well as a 612hp turbocharged mitsu eclipse. Now this is not to say that Toyota is bad with warranty. I have done a motor job on a 92 camry v6 with 153k miles on it. Way out of warranty. Came in for shutting down on the interstate. Pulled the valve covers and diagnosed it as the ever-so-popular gelling sludge motor. Called Joe (our field service rep) and he OK'd a good will warranty. Bottom line: a nice old lady got a 6.8k dollar long block installed and only had to pay 500 dollars of the labor, Toyota picked up the rest. However, some smart punk 25 or so year old guy came in thinking he was warrantied and spent over two grand. I have nothing against younger people as I am only 21, but that is my take on being nice to who you bring your car to. And as long as we are on this tangent (HA!) we are not magicians and we do not have crystal balls. We go through a never ending cycle of factory training. When you complain about a 120 dollar diagnostic fee you don't realize this. We get paid flat rate. Sometimes we diagnose and find a problem in 10 minutes and still get paid our one hour. On the other hand, sometimes I get an airbag open squib circuit voltage too low electrical nightmare, spend three hours, and still only get paid an hour. We are just a bunch of good fellas (MOST of us) who love what we do. Passion is what drives this industry. But yes, there are people who will try to rob you, and we as a whole community despise them like we do who when someone puts a tang in a 24" tank. Ha.

Hi I am a nissan master tech. I see this code almost every day. It is one of two things 1 the gas cap is lose or not on. You said that you checked this. This means that it is # 2 a vent control valve. look behind the drivers rear tire under the car. you will see a black cover remove the 2 clips pull down on sheild you will see a black box. On the front of the box you will see 3 hose. one goes into a valve. this is the valve that needs to be replaced. if your looking at the front of the valve remove the connector and hose twist 1/4 turn counter clockwise. Pull out valve go to dealer and get new vent valve. This is a dealer only part.

With the gas cap, you said "I tried that already", what did you try? Cause when my light came on, I "checked" the gas cap, and that wasn't it, so I bought a new one, and I had to get the system reset.
Of course it only lasted 600 miles before it came back on, but it was enough to pass inspection, so it'll stay on til next year, lol

If the weather is cold out 36 degrees or below the car does not test the evap system and will clear the code. I bet when it warms up the light will come on. I hope it stays off but do not be surprised if it does come back on.

Welcome to the site!
Your first post is a bit odd, but, ok...
According to:
http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/nissan/ (google "nissan altima error codes")

P1445
EVAP Canister Purge Volume Control Valve
P1448
EVAP Canister Vent Control Valve (Open)

The maintenance manager here at work has a reader that reads error codes and can then reset the code back to 0. If you can find someone to do that for you, you can get your inspection *perhaps* before the check engine light registers the error again. It might give you a bit more time to get the control valve replaced. Otherwise, pay money to a car shop to have it replaced now.

Hope this helps!
