Carbon in bulk

I want to buy larger quantities of carbon. I found on another site, sorry SWF.com, some large 5 gal buckets. Its described as Lignite carbon. I did not find many old threads about this type of carbon. Anyone have any insight to wether this might be a good deal or a tank killer?

lignites iodine number is about 600
standard carbons iodine number is around 1000
this indicates that lignite carbon is less active than other types of carbon despite the producer'/sellers claims.
the pore size of lignite carbon is good allowing more efficient adsorption but its active life is shorter.

here google carbochem.com/activatedcarbon101
it will explain a lot about various carbon types.

make sure you look at the water soluble ash contents of the carbons listed as water soluble ash can leach metals into water.

Just got several things in bulk from bulk reef supply dot com. Carbon, kalk and GFO. Can't beat the prices! 4.5lbs of kalk for the same price as a half lb of kent kalk!
The carbon is ROX o8, 950 iodine, ash mass of 3%
What do you think z? good stuff?

I buy my Seachem Matrix Carbon in 2 liter bottles and I am pretty sure they make larger containers. I don't think I am allowed to say where I get it from though. The ash content takes me less then 5 seconds to wash off, the phosphate level is wayyyyyyyyyyy down (I think it might be around .000007), the surface area is rather large, and the HUGE bonus to me is the spherical shape. It allows for more water to be pushed through the carbon rather then over it if it should become to impacted.
84 thumbs up for Matrix Carbon. I have been using it for quite some time now and am still very pleased.

probably one of the better lignite based activated carbons you can find but a really short longevity (aka will work like gangbusters for a week before its maxed out) but does contain heavy metals that may be associated with leaching in trace amounts. {realize this amount if probably far less than cheap activated carbon bought in local fish stores, I would say its about 7 steps up from API store bought carbon)
the ash mass isnt really as important as the water soluble ash levels, unfortunatly information like that is really hard to track down unless your a member of a scientific research institute (believe me I ran into about a dozen brick walls) they want 14$ for an article that details it since I'm not a member.

REEFKPRZ thanks for the good info.. I will look into it! I am learning a lot of ways after a year into the hobby to buy bulk and use alternative products!
