carbon plus sponge filter ?

i have a small 18 gallon nano tank that i just cycled. is it necessary to run the sponge and carbon in my filter, it has both as options. i have left both in while cycling but as i begin to add things, should i just stick with one, the other, or both? thanks, brian.

opinions vary... I run my tetratec with the carbon in and I change it out once a month. The sponge filter traps debris and needs to be cleaned ( 2 times a month I clean it out ...)
If you don't want the maintenance hassle then I'd remove them and run carbon as needed (to help clear up the water)...
