Running 7 pounds of carbon 24/7 in an Ocean Clear canister for the past 6 months. Change it every 3 months. May be overkill but tank (90 gal reef) has never been cleaner (no tint to water). So far no increase in nitrates.

I run a bag of carbon and another of phosphate sponge once a month for a few days...keep it in the sump in the chamber between the skimmer and return pump. Been working that way for a while now...clear water/zero phosphates...must be effective.Can't say its vital...or even a key step in maintaining a reef...but I can say its worked for me!
