What do you need it for? Carbon should only be used to remove meds or to polish the water. What kind of a filter do you have?

I hear mixed things on carbon and the tanks. I have not heard a reason why running carbon is bad so I use it when I finish my set-up. I use matrix carbon currently on my freshwater and it is a very clean carbon and I have great results with it (I plan to use this on my SW as well).

Carbon works great for instantly pulling out toxins, but if left in the tank it also pulls your trace quickly. If you have FO then no worries. If in reef and you supplement your water, you probably already are used to the extra draw of carbon and its no issue.
best way to replace elements consistantly and smoothly is with waterchanges, so no real BAD side to carbon in my book, but I never use it.

I use chemi pure in a small left over freshwater filter i had. It does an excellent job and does not remove your trace elements...

Carbon, if used over time, does pull out your trace elements and can lead to HLLE (head and lateral line disease).
