Do carnations need strong lighting and what do they eat?
They are totally non-photosynthetic and need a near constant drip of planktonic foods - especially phytoplankton. There is some emerging interest in these types corals which is helping to solve some of the problems of keeoing them, but they remain near impossible to those without a setup totally dedicated to their needs.

I believe the statement near constant drip of planktonic foods would of indicated that you really cant feed them enough by periodic target feedings. To give them what they require you would need a constant flow of food and a much larger filter and skimming set up than normal to help keep your tank stable.

Absolutely right. The aquarists that are now consistently succesfull with these corals are using a CONSTANT supply of food. Without which, the couple of corals we call 'carnations' are doomed to slow starvation.

I'm not trying to hijack your thread tito3054, but after my 2 gallon FW cherry shrimp tank crashed, I was thinking of devoting a little 2 gallon tank to ONLY non-photosynthetic corals with an actinic lighting so there wouldn't be any algae growth. I know its a bit small, but a 50% water change is only 1 gallon.
What do you all think?
