I've been thinking of changing cc to ls to lower nitrate and have talked with a few people here online, although I never made it clear I have fish only tank.I have turned off my ugf and am told thats a mistake, they say thats for reef only...anyone got any more info

changin cc to ls wouldnt be to much of a change except cosmetic. And also it will help water quality. buy one bag live sand.. 20 lbs.. add it.. then wait 10 days.. and add a little more regular sand... but slowly/.. adding to much sand at one time can make your tank cycle and kill the fish.. plus the cc get really dirty!

I must disagree with Reefman on this one..Changinmg to Live sand will make a BIG diference in your tank,As long as you go with 3-4 inches. Also DO NOT MIX the sand and CC.The sand will make it's way to the bottom, thus eliminating any benafits of having it.And lastly,By Just adding sand to an existing setup(as per reefmans post) there will NOT be a recycle.A recycle would occure if you were to remove the CC,Then replace it with "DEAD SAND".But if using live sand,ALL LIVE SAND,There will be no recycle at all...

i also agree with mr salty, but he forgot to mention that it's not only for cosmetics, cc holds nitrates, ls doesn't and even if you use some ls to seed dead sand, your tank won't cycle

you can order the sand off of this website, or you can probably buy live sand in a bag from your LFS. my lfs sells Argo-live i think is the name of it. the sand will not die in shipping as it has a good shelf life. yes, do not use your UGF if you switch to LS. most do not use a UGF anyway. southdown is not live. people use this and mix it with LS to "seed" the southdown. after a while it will become live.
