CC is different and must be vaccuumed.

gently vaccuum the CC everytime you do a water change... make sure you have a good clean up crew, keep fish that arent messy eaters, get plenty of LR, and DO NOT over feed your fish... although you will probably be told numerous times just to get rid of the CC and change to LS, all it takes is a little more work and maintenance...

When I first set up my tank about 4 years ago now, I bought a starter kit from the LFS, it came with the CC. And I have just left it in there. I vacuum it about every 3 weeks or so. I keep the tank rather clean. I had just read a few posts that were talking about LS and the effect vacuuming has in destroying the bacteria and what not. Just wanted to make sure I havent been doing somthing wrong for years. The shrimp and crabs seem to love it, they are constantly picking into it.

The issue with vaccuuming sand is more with sucking out all of the beneficial micro critters.
