CC REMOVAL

I am curious, I want to remove most of my CC substrate from my 125 gallon fish only. I have never really had any problems with high nitrate levels, tested around 5 ppm. Once removed, could I just leave behind a thin layer of the CC just for appearance reasons. My system has a wet/dry sump/filter, two skimmers (one in sump and 1 BakPak CRP). 135 # live rock and the tank has been established for about 2 years. I would rather do this then go with a DSB. I have heard that CC is a nitrate factory and I also know of many people that use no substrate at all in a fish only set-up.
Any opinions/suggestions?

you said you nave a wet dry it will be ok to remove the cc you can leave 1/2 inch on the bottom of the tank that is what the suggestion is with a wet dry!!
