CC to Sand

Hi, I would like to change my CC to Sand someday. I would not be using live sand as it is not available here. I would be using the sand for marine tanks in bags at my LFS.
How much sand would I need for my 10 gal?
Also, how would I go about doing this so it does not crash my whole system?
