Chalky odor on live rock

I purchased some figi and tonga rock from someone who had the rock dried out for several months. He never used chemicals on in the tank. When I brought home the rock and started to rinse it with tap water, it had a strong chalky odor. I cannot think of any other way to describe it. I put it in a QT for a couple of days with SW, but even the water stunk. So I took it out and boiled it in RODI water for 30 min, then baked it until dry. It is back in the QT with a fresh batch of saltwater pulled from DT, ...but it still smells strong! I realize that it is nothing but base rock now (with a beautiful shape), but is it normal for it to have this odor? Will the odor go away after it is colonized by the bacteria and other things from the live rock--or is that odor indicative of trouble?
