Changing A Heater: Help!

Okay, I have a 55g tank with a 200w heater.
I want to change to a 250w heater.
How do I go about doing this without killing the tank?

But what if the set temp is different than the temp the heater will actually heat the tank to?
I don't want the temp to change more than a degree or two.

Why are you changing heaters? Does your tank run cold this time of year? You would be better off with 2 smaller heaters anyway
AND if you buy a good heater...it should keep the water at the temp you set it

A degree or two won't hurt your tank but it's always a good idea to keep an eye on your temp after installing any new heater to see how accurate it is anyways.

We'll see.
Maybe I'll adjust it to the correct temp in a 5g first.
That might just work.
You could always put it in the tank with your other heater. When the old heater clicks off after being warm enough then turn the new one up untill you see it click on, then just turn it back one notch untill it clicks off as well. You should be pretty close to the exact same setting that way. And just keep an eye on it to make sure your temps don't go out of wack. Even with the best heaters your tank is still going to fluctuate by a degree or so anyway throught the course of the night and day with varying room temps.

Agree probably the easiest way to do it.

No, the tank runs a little warm right now. I just don't trust the current heater. It is a cheap, all-glass heater. I want to replace it with a jager. That's what i run in my qt, and am very happy with. Besides, I need a heater for mixing saltwater, and figure i might as well buy a better one for my tank and use the old one for mixing.

I didn't think of that. Sounds like a good plan.

That's what I normally do, but one of my heaters, another 200w, seems to only be able to heat a 5g bucket to 76 degrees, and my tank is 81-82 degrees. Normally, I would just use my 75w qt heater, but it's in use right now.
