1. You will need tap-water conditioner. A good declorinator is more important than gravel and plants.
2. PH Buffer - your tap water will not be at 7.0 - which is where most FW fish need to be.
3. PH Test Kit. Your salt PH kit might not test for the lower ranges. Mine does not. Plus, if you plan to have live plants, you will want it even lower, between 6.2-6.7, depending on species.
4. Gravel Vaccuum - you should probably already have one. But if you dont, FW does not USUALLY afford you the luxury of a "clean-up-crew." You need to manually siphon fish waste, especially if you are going to house meat-eaters, like Oscars or Pirahnas.
5. Heater - if you have one already, great. If not, many tropical fish need to be at 78-82 degrees, the higher end not being achievable at most room temps.
6. You will need freshwater aquarium salt. Electrolytes are vital, especially for new, stressed fish. So is a supplement like "Slime Coat," which helps the fish recover from being netted and bagged.
7. New Carbon Bags. This i one thing you can't clean-off and re-use.
8. Food (flakes, feeders, frozen) depending on fish kept.
9. Meds - Ich Guard. I like to be safe rather than sorry. Dosing your tank to kill Ich is most effective in the first few hours when you notice it.
10. Decor - I dont like putting river rocks or driftwood from outside in my tank. It invites all sorts of bad things. If you do, make sure you BOIL BOIL BOIL everything. Other things such as pirate ships, sunken treasures etc. Of course that would require another air pump.
11. "Cycle Test Kit" - if you dont already have a kit to test for Amm/Trites/Trates, you need it.
There are other things I am forgetting. Bottom line: if you skip out on this stuff because you dont have the money, then you shouldn't be getting involved with it. These things aren't cheap. They raise your electric bill, they take your time, and yes, you will pump money in to it in many other ways.
Freshwater aquariums are not cheap.
