I'm thinking about changing out the crushed coral and under gravel filters in my 137 gallon tank, and using sand instead. What would be the easiest way to do this, and how much sand would I need?
First off welcome to the BB, I see your from OR me too. Do you come up to the Portland area to shop? Well I recently did the switch from CC to a DSB (deep sand bed, usually ranges from 3-6 inches depending on you preferences) and I am very happy I did it. I would toss the UGF and only use a DSB and Live Rock as filtration. How much LR do you have in your tank right now? What are the dimensions of the tank? This will help us give you answer to your ?
The tank is 24" deep, 24" high, 60" long. I only have about 4 live rocks at this time. Would it work to get rid of part of the CC and bury the rest under sand. Would the sand have to be live sand, or could I buy the bagged stuff.
And there is another person from Oregon!
I did this several years ago. What a mess!!!! But I am very glad I did it. No more cleaning dirty CC every Saturday morning! I did an entire conversion. I purchased 70 pounds of very established LR and a large amount of LS and then I spent an entire Saturday making the change.
I cleaned the gravel really well!!!
I removed all of the fish and about 1/2 of the water and I placed it in a large rubbermaid tub with a heat and airstone. I removed the rock and other decorative items I had in the tank and then I began to remove the CC. I did leave a little CC maybe an inch on the bottom. I placed my rocks and then I slowly added the LS. I did not use the really fine sugar sand since I needed to put the fish back in the tank that day, and I could not have the type of sandstorm that Downsouth or walt smith creates. I think I used Nature's Ocean and some Fiji LS I purchased at the LFS.
I hope this is what you needed to know. It was a pain on my 55 gallon. I can only imagine what a really large tank would be like. But I can tell you that it made tank maintance very easy.
Good luck,
Connie
