changing out substrate

so I was questioning removing my CC subtrate and going "bare bottom", which my husband absol. loves the term!!! I think instead I'm going to go with a thin sand bed. I have so many critters currently in the CC and I want to transfer them over. Can I take all the rock and majority of the water out of the tank and put them in buckets, then put the sand in and replace the rock and water again. Will this cause a spike or cycle? I cleaned my tank last night and I always vaccuum the CC when I do this. I always end up sucking up all these min. brittles and pods that live in the CC and they end up going down the drain. Last night I ran my water thru a net to catch them and put them into my 19 gallon tank. I would like to do this and put them back into the tank after putting sand in so that I have all those beneficial bugs and stars to help prevent cycle problems. What are your thoughts on this. I think I am just going to buy play sand since I already have lots of live rock and can put all these goodies back into the sand. Only one portion of my tank with vaccuuming gave approx 50+ of these stars in the net. Its was crazy!!! I didnt know I had that many!
