changing sand bed depth

i would like to eventually consider getting a jawfish for my 12 gallon but i have a few problems. the sandbed is only about an 1 1/2 inches deep and jawfish need a deeper sand bed in order to burrow
. also my live rock is sitting on top of the sand and i wouldnt want the rocks to fall on the fish! what should i do? ( i would really like a jawfish, but it is just a fish for me to consider...im still not sure though
).

With the sandbed depth a jawfish needs it seems like it would be hard to keep them in a 12 gallon. You'd lose a lot of water volume to make up the necessary sand. At least that is the conclusion I came to when I was considering them for mine.
Set your rocks on the bottom of the aquarium so that they are stable. The jawfish will dig under them, but as long as they are resting on the bottom glass you shouldn't have an avalanche.

Im sure that it is natural instinct. That is there home. Its like beavers and dams.. They would still build them if you had noone around.

im planning to get one too soon. my depth is about 2 to 2 1/2 inches deep. but im planning to just add a little more to the front corner of my tank so he can dig ther instead of under the rocks. thats wut my LFS owner does. hes got a 55 gallon with the sand stacked up in the corners about 4 inches but 2 inches everywhere else. the jawfish go right to it and burrow where its deeper.

That might work, but in my experience no matter how great you try to make one spot for your wet friends they rarely agree. In my case it has always been somewhere that you can't view easily.

ya thats just like my fire shrimp, hes always in the back of the tank. im pickin up 10lbs of rock this weekend though to hopefully make the back fill out so he cant hide back there. do u think 24 lbs of lr is gonna be too much for a 20 gallon?
but for the jawfish just try the sand in one corner and add him in. if he doesnt like it there he'll borough sideways under a rock or something.
