OK, first unplug the filter. Then there is a lever (i think it is grey), it is where the hoses connect to the filter canister, push the lever up to turn off water flow to tank. Then there is a blue lever in the same place, push that up to disconnect the hosing from the canister. Then you can pick up the canister and take it to the sink. I do not dump the water from the canister back into the tank, but i guess you could (I always did a manual top off after cleaning filter). Then you lift up both latches on the canister, to open it up. Do what you need to do to clean it, replace carbon, etc. Then hook it back up like you took it apart, plug it in, and then pump the pump lever till it starts working by itself. Hope that helps. i always rinse the carbon really well before putting it in the filter, but often when you start the filter again it will cloud the water a little. Good luck
