Chemi-Pure, does is cause lateral line?

I read in a magazine, that using an activated carbon has shown to cause lateral line disease in Angel fish. I use chemi-pure in my sump, and was wondering if anyone had any other information. The magazine said that it can be used every so often, but not all the time. I have always been using chemi-pure, but will stop if it can cause this disease.

I have had 2 tangs with HLLE and have tried to address the matter every which way. I have heard of, read of, listened to everything from stray voltage to Vit A deficency. From bad water quailtiy to stress from other tank mates. From Vit C defiency to lack of adequate greens...and I have also heard of the carbon theory.
I tried addressing all the nutritional aspects as well as the stray voltage. A few months ago, I had to take one of my tangs out of my main tank [for reasons unrelated to HLLE] and put him in a tiny tank that only had a PH and his favorite rock. Well, I figured the tang wouldn't fare too well in here. WRONG. HLLE started healing within a few days, and within a month it was 50% better. As soon as he returned to main tank, the HLLE returned. What was the difference between the 2 tanks? Well, carbon was being used in the main tank, not the QT. Also had a UV in the main and not the QT. The tang was also alone in the QT, but not in the main tank. It wasn't water quality cause the water in the QT came from the main tank.
Now, because I am re-vamping my main tank, my fish are in a QT with only PH and dead corals. Lets see what happens to the tang and HLLE now.

Its funny you should say that. Beth and myself just were talking about hlle and I told her that I noticed my purple tang would start showing signs of hlle whenever I ran carbon then disappear when I stopped. I no longer use carbon but dont believe it to be the sole cause just a contributing cause. It must pull too much vital vitamins and minerals out of the water.

I'm beginning to think that HLLE is the most mystifying of the aquaria fish diseases....heck, its what brought me to this board! LOL Now I'm a shark :), and my tang still has HLLE!
