I just bought a used cl-280 chiller and it needs to be re-charged. does anyone know what type of freon goes in it.

Nice... I bet you got a good deal on it.
It's likely R-22. If it was R-134a it would almost definitely say so on the label.
I assume you are going to have it done since it's illegal and near impossible to work with R22 unless you have a license to mess with it and have all the equipment to work on them.
The other thing you are going to have to find out is why it leaked. The gas circuit should be hermetically sealed for the life of the unit... if they leak, you need to find out where, but a refrigeration tech can do that for you too most likely.

my buddy owns a heater and aircondition shop and said he can findthe leak and recharge it for me but he needs to know what freon it takes

Take the cover off, there should be a label with R-type on the frame. If not, then look at the compressor label. Refrigerant is not a consumable - If it needs to be charged, then it is leaking.

I'd call the manufacturer if you can't find out any other way.
The label should say though... it usually indicates the nominal high and low side pressures, refrigerant type, and amount of refrigerant it takes.

I agree it should be marked, and there are a difference in the fittings between the 2 as well.......
