Chocolate Starfish legs damaged

I just received my fish order this morning. Two legs are broken off half way up the starfish and have clumpy pieces hanging from them. His bag was placed in the corner of the box and the box looked slightly dented on that corner. How do I tell if he is still alive and should I still add him to my tank? Any infomation would be greatly appreciated

It may be a blessing in disguise. If you have any corals in your tank or plan to you do not want a Chocolate Starfish in your tank.

I am assuming this is a chocolate chip starfish and not some sort of brittlestar? I'm surprised that legs would be broken off a chocolate chip star :notsure:

Yes, it is a chocolate chip starfish. The two legs looked smashed, not a clean break. It did move from one side of the bag to the other, so it is still alive.

I would put him in the tank--they can grow their appendages back. You don't have any corals do you?

If the starfish turned white it is dead. The chocholate chips will also look bleached.

I would acclimate him to the tank. Keep an eye on him. try to spot feed him. His legs should grow back. If you got it from this site, I'd email and let them know. You have 6 days with this site.
