I have a 47 gal bowfront, Is it really needed to have like 40 snails? How many do you all have in your tanks.

I have and 80 gal. and I have so far (had to start tank over cause ich killed it) 4 nas. snails (going to get like 20?) 6 turbo snails (going to get two more) 4 blue leg hermit crabs (prob. going to get 6 more) and 2 emerald crabs. I also want to add to my list a coral banded shrimp OR a few cleaner shrimp... unsure yet. Hope that helps a little. Oh by the way, the nas snails are great for moving your sand if you have LS, the burrow themselves in it which is great cause I don't think they're that attractive.. :0)

in my 55 i have 10 turbos, 5 nassarius, and about 15 different hermits

in my 195 i have about 10 astrea, 10 trochus, 2 mexican turbos, and about 8 nassarius. i'd like to get rid of about 3 or 4 nassarius.
to answer your question- no. it's not necessary to have tons of snails.
i know people who have 20x the amount of snails i have, in a smaller tank than i have, and have more algae issues than i do.
it's all about nutrients. the more nutrients, the more fuel for algae growth.
if i removed all of my snails right now, it wouldn't make any difference.
