Clean up Crew

I have a 30 g tank and was wondering how many hermit crabs, snails, and other parts of the CUC would I need for a tank that size? It is not a coral tank, around 20 lbs or LR and 40 lbs of live sand

Really? This is the first i've heard of not even using them. Don't you have to clean your tank a lot more often without one though?

I think 2quills was asking why YOU think you need a CUC. (correct me if I am wrong).
What signs have you seen in your tank that makes you think you need them now?? I personally have a pretty lite CUC... A few snails, hermits, 2 urchins, and a couple of skunk cleaner shrimps for a 125g. I have seen some folks recommend what I have in my tank for a CUC in a 30g reef. Each tank is different so each CUC should be different. Do you have any algae in the tank yet? When you feed do the fish get all the food, or does it settle on the rock work to rot?
Don't go off of what some online store is selling for a reef pack. They usually add things that are not needed (and charge more for it).

Agreed. I have a 90 gal that has 7-ish hermit crabs, 2 or 3 snails and 2 black brittle stars. I have about 50 empty snail shells in the tank for the hermit crabs to move in to when they out grow their current house. That has kept them from killing my snails. (knock on wood)

On a tank that size I would have 2-3 Mexican Turbo (eats algae) and 2-3 Nassarius(eats detritus and uneaten food) or Crabs 2 Emerald (eats algae) and 3-4 scarlet hermits (eats detritus and uneaten food). I would not mix snails and crabs, crabs will eat your snails.

You would be correct, sir.
After a while I gave up on the idea of having a large cuc as I felt that it was just not necissary for me. The life in the rock and sand bed I felt was enough in my case.
I dont think any amount of cuc is going vastly reduce having to peform maintenance duties. With the acception of maybe a few algae eaters that helped keep nuisance algae to a minimum and a peprmint shrimp to help keep the aiptasia at bay.

Ok thank you. That is good to know. My tank is still cycling so I do not have any fish or anything at the moment. I am new to the aquarium world and just saw reef packages and clean up crew info all over the place as I did research and assumed it was something I would need

Brings up a different question for you. How are you cycling your tank? And are you ghost feeding? You will get some detritus build up but I would just siphon it out with water changes. Not until you get fish will you need a CUC.

I have about 20 lbs of live rock in the tank and 40 lbs of live sand. After filling it I left a shrimp in the water for a few days until the ammonia levels rose, then took it out. Now I am checking the water every few days for the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels to drop. Is there any steps I am missing in that process? and once the levels do drop to 0 do I need to wait longer to make sure the levels don't spike again or am I good to add fish at that point?

Doing everything correct. When ammonia hits 0 start ghost feeding tank as if there is 1 fish in tank. Nitrates and Nitrites will follow when they both hit 0 then you good to add a fish, you don't have to wait. Every time you add a creature to your tank you are adding more bi load and the tank we have a cycle, usually takes about 10days. That is why you should never add more than 1 fish at a time, to give time for bacteria to multiply.
