Clean Water Overkill

I will be inheriting a 100 gal acrylic tank and stand. I plan on adding a wet/dry filter, Fluval 40 canister filled with carbon only, Berlin Classic or Turbo protein skimmer, 10 gal sump, and a refugium (probably a cheap 10 or 20 gal glass tank from a local store).
Water flow will consist of 2 paths:
1. Tank to wet/dry to protein skimmer to 10 gal sump to Fluval & back to tank.
2. Tank to refugium & back to tank.
Is adding a refugium overkill for cleaning up the water?
My intention is to do the water changes from the refugium only.

A refugium is not overkill. It is a natural type of filtration and would work good on any saltwater system. ;)

If you had enough LR and LS and a good refugium growing, could you skip the other filters? I've been reading that some are still recommending at least a protein skimmer. I've read also that trickle filters aren't good for the overabundance of nitrate they create.
