Why risk it when you more than likely don't have the algae growth to support the crew yet? If you have your ammonia spike with the crew in there then there will be casualties.

well my live rock has algae in there cuz i bought it from a guy with a DT tank.....so it has algae on it...and ive heard both ways that they will survive?

In that case you probably won't experience an ammonia spike. The established live rock you put in there has enough bacteria on it already to handle the ammonia and nitrites and turn it into nitrates. I did a simular thing when I started my tank years ago. You should be good to go with a small clean up crew.

Do you have any ammonia present in the system? I would think with 2 damsels in a new tank you should see some sort of ammonia present. If you have no ammonia and also no nitrite present then you are ready to add your clean up crew, although it is kind of strange that you had no ammonia spike with your tank unless you got mature live rock from another aquarist or something. Just a few questions I was wondering about

No ammonia at all! I guess the live rock & live sand kept me frm getting the spike....I kept checking but never happened....

well heres the thing a ammonia spike is a musta s this is what was trying to be accomplished by the demsel, i would take everything out of the tank and start a cycle with a piece of shrimp or some uncured live rock, just becuase things are living in there does not mean that you will not have one as soon as your bioload increases.

How big is your tank and how much LR/LS do you have? I have a 30 gal with 40 lbs LS and LR and I never saw a spike in ammonia, even after adding a shrimp for about a week. Just saw my nitrates go up a little bit.

Disagree. An ammonia spike is not a must. It usually occurs because a tank has an insufficient amount of bacteria to break down ammonia being produced in a tank. If he has fish (which are obviously producing ammonia), and he's not getting a spike, it simply means that he had enough bacteria in the cured rock to completely break down all the available ammonia. So long as he increases his fish load slowly, the bacteria levels will naturally build and maintain the tank. There is nothing magical about an ammonia spike ~ the decline of the spike is just a sign that bacteria levels are increasing.
For goodness sake, if you haven't gotten a spike yet, your fine, just keep an eye on your ammonia levels to make sure you don't get one in the future. Especially when introducing more fish.

Could be but it also could be how your testing if your usig strips they can be way off. just my noob two cents. I would make sure your using quality testing kit etc.

Well, I am no longer using test strips, I used them for about 2 days and went and bought a liquid testing kit. Still getting "0" ammonia with both tests.
Thanks for all the information, keep me updated!
