Cleaning Canister Filter ?

Just a quick question to the group on cleaning filter. I have a Eheim 2228 Pro II, canister filter that I really enjoy. I have been changing the filter media, ie carbon and white foam filter monthly. and just rinsed out the course blue media the other day. The question is more of when should I change if ever the subtrat and mech material. And how often should I partially clean as not to ruin my bacteria on there.
Any personal preferences out there about this or insight even if on another type of Maker
Thanks

You should completely clean the entire filter at least once a month. A SW bio filtration is mostly in the rock and sand. Cleaning the filter will not cause any spikes or problems. I do this with my Fluval in my 55 and have never had a problem. A canister filter in a SW tank is for mechanical cleaning and chemical water polishing.
Just watch out for pods that post up in the canister!

Sorry to reply to this ancient thread, but I have a question about Drakken's comments... that maybe someone now can answer.
If the purpose of a cannister filter in a SW tank is strictly for mechanical cleaning...etc... should i not even bother with having the little "stones" that are inside the filter (bio stones I suppose) and just run straight carbon and floss?

When I first upgraded from the cannister to protein skimmer and fuge, I turned off the cannister filter for about a month and the water parameters were excellent and water crystal clear. This setup with live rock and sand bed I have found to be ideal. I later on decided to use the cannister filter for added water flow at the surface and the occasional carbon run. Using the cannister with floss/filter pads is not necessary in this instance.
