tomorrow when i do a water change i was wondering if it would be a good idea to take out all my chaeto and syphon out any free floating junk that might be resting on the top of my 4-5" sand bed of my fuge or should i jsut leave it alone. i have to take out probably 2 pounds of chaeto anyway and whenever i touch it some junk goes though the pump into the tank so thats why i was thinking of getting any crap off the top layer of sand.... good or bad?

yes, it's a good idea to siphon off any floating stuff you can, and also if you have a seperate intake you should suck any detritus on the bottom there.

what do you mean seperate intake?

if you have a section of your fuge where the water goes first, or if your sump/fuge has more than just a fuge compartment in it.
