Cleaning Glass

Anyone have a surefire way of cleaning an empty tank plagued with hard water deposit? I've heard of a vinegar soak, lemon oil, clr, or any of the bathroom glass cleaners.
I'm just looking for any recommendations. The biggest problem is the outside glass if that helps with solutions.

vinegar soak and a cc card to scrap with

vinegar soak then scrape with a razor blade. Just be careful around the silicone seal.

Thanks guys thats what I thought; but how can I soak the outside of the tank? How long does it need to soak and what is the mix amounts; how much vinegar per water?
