Cleaning Lady used Windex

My wife had a new cleaning crew come in and clean the house and she forgot to tell them to stay away from the tank. She caught them doing it when she came around the corner. There isn't any livestock in there yet and the top is buttoned really tight except for the skimmer box. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Bruce

The major problems arise when you use commercial cleaning products over a long period of time on a tank. I don't think a one-time application is cause for much alarm.... as long as you have a good skimmer.

It is bad because theoretically the airborne particals can get into the tank and build up in the water if you continuously use windex to clean.

this happened to someone i know, and it restarted his cycle due to the ammount of ammonia in windex. u might be ok though with a tight lid on things.

And my hubby thinks I was just being my old anal self. The first evening I set the tank up, I got everything put together, left the room, and there he was spraying Windex all over the tank...I had a heart attack!! He was only trying to help, and there wasn't a big scene, but I did eventually let him in that we shouldn't do that. He's very excited about this project too.

I use glass plus...wipes. Just about every day since they invented them. If I run out and have to use the spray, then I spray the rag then wipe. I don't spray the actual tank.

i'm not joking either, no way in hell that stuff can get in my tank and probably most of yours if you have a nice canopy

Only other problem I can see is that a lot of people use the same rag to clean the tank for a long time (at least I do). One day you will do something like spill some water on the bar that the canopy rests on and wipe it up with the windexy rag. Its too easy to get lazy one day and use the rag for a purpose that can accidently introduce the chemicals into the tank. Just my opinion.

Ammonia evaporates pretty easily, I'd be more worried about the perfumes, suracants, and dyes in windex. Small ammounts of pure ammonia is actually used by some people for "fishless" cycles in tanks with no live rock. It would cause an ammonia spike in your aquarium if you get much in it, a strong biofilter should eventually process it though.
Since the origional question was about an empty tank and a cleaning lady, I'm curious if it was windex or the pure ammonia bulk stuff some professionals use. If it was pure ammonia, and you havn't stocked the tank yet, I wouldn't worry.

I fired the cleaning company. It even states in the agreement they won't do tanks.
Now how do I fire my wife? :D (gonna have to edit this later I bet).
Anyway, I was not to worried about the ammonia that got in there, that will cycle out when I start it Friday when I get my LR & LS. I was more concerned about the other unknown ingredients that might have got in. I just ran another set of tests;
PH = 8.4
Alk = normal (red sea test kit gives no numbers, salifert on order)
NH3 & NH4 = 0.25ppm total, toxic = 0.035ppm
NO2 = 0.1ppm
NO3 = 2.5ppm
Ca = 350ppm
Phosphate = 0.01ppm
All seems well. Time to put my little guy to bed and order me some of that Live Rock and get this party started...It's been 3 months in the making. :happy: :happy: :joy: :joy: :D :D
Thanks for the replies,
Mr. patience
