hey yall, Kerber again.
Whats the best way to clean my filter? And how often? I recently decided to compeltly restart my tank (about 3 weeks ago) because when I started it the first time, I was not prepared and went about it all wrong. I also learned not to wash my filter with tap water...but what CAN i wash it with? Distilled water? And how often should I clean it? and how often should I replace the filtering material?
Thanks guys!

Hi there,
What do you mean "clean" you filter?? The actual filter or the media??
Tell us what kind of filter do you have (Hang on back, canister)?
I have used a HOB style Penguin filter before and sometimes the whole thing needs to be cleaned (not very often, for me at least). I would take it off the tank and clean it with hot tap water (the actual filter) and replace the media with new stuff.
Nothing wrong with using hot tap water to clean equipment (how the heck else do you clean a skimmer collection cup?!?!?!). As long as you dry it off. I think you meant the filter material was not to be cleaned with tap water??? Just don't use any soap or cleaning products on SW equipment.
A nice vinegar soak for 24 hours is always nice as well for equipment.

I have a cube too and I just built a filter rack for the second column in the back. You can get a bag of filter fluff for cheap and just tear off a bunch and throw it away once it gets dirty and you don't have to worry about cleaning anything and if you have charcoal and live rock on the rack you can take it in and out whenever you want.
I originally ordered one online and it arrived broken so I just went and made my own. Only took 15 minutes and is a breeze to clean. I actually thought about selling some since it was so easy and I have plenty of left over material. Just an idea for ya
