cleaning prefilter sponge in overflow?

I'm just about setup and ready to go.
I've got a AGA 90g w/overflow.
If I use the prefilter sponge in the overflow, how often should I clean it and how?

I try to clean mine every couple of days as it catches uneaten food and some other stuff I don't care to look at that close to identify.

check every other week with your regular maintenance

I clean mine every two weeks when I do a water change, I rince it out in a bucket of water that I just pulled out of the tank. Good Luck
