Leaving the neck dirty of the skimmer actually will reduce the efficiency of the skimmer.....

I need to work on an automatic wash down system that would be easy to use and cheap....That would be super sweet!!!!!!

anyway, as stated before, keeping the inner neck clean will make the skimmer run better.

If your skimmer has one of those plastic boxes filled with foam that the skimmer return feeds into, it's to reduce micro bubbles for tank mounts. You need to clean that filter pad, I was having a problem with my reading being kinda high and it was driving me crazy trying to find the source, then one day I noticed the foam in the box, washed it out and few days later readings dropped.

I find soaking my skimmer in hot water - no cleaners of course - then a good rinse does it all the time
