well i wouldnt do any cleaning until its up and running, and it depends on your substrate, cleaning crew( crabs, snails, etc.) or..........do you mean cleaning the tank you got from your friend to get it ready to fill and have fish?....the only way i know and trust is a sponge will absolutely no chemicals on it, i mean none.,...brand new, washed several times in nothing but hot water, and lots of hot water and that sponge.......NO CHEMICALS!!!!! NO CHEMICALS!!!!!!NO CHEMICALS!!!!!!! inside or out around near it anything, no chemicals...is he including a filter?? sump etc...skimmer, on and on be more specific
