Cleaning

Good question.
I would have to guess no. When I added my sand it was really cloudy and evrybody told me leave it alone, they said all the dust was good for the tank. So I would think all the "gunk"in the sump would be ok too. Are you running a protein skimmer?

I can't find the thread, but I believe there was a debate awhile back about that. Something about the nitrates slowly going up in a sump. I think he said it takes a year or so and then the tank could crash. You may want to do a search.

I clean my sump. The first stage where the water comes in from the main tank gets a collection of gunk. When I do water changes I suck it all out. Bad, I don't know but I don't see how it could be beneficial.

I do run a skimmer but I have a bit of "mud" in the bottm of the sump. It has been up about three years. Tell ya all what...if you read this give me a thumbas up if you clean and a thumbs down if you don't...I'll go with the numbers on FRI the 30th.
