I've never used a wet/dry type filter...but I would think it may need to be cleaned from time to time...sort of like dumping the scum out of my skimmer. I have also heard that the bio-balls or other filtration media needs to be removed and cleaned to prevent excess build up...which may result in excess nitrates.
But maybe somebody with experience using and maintaining a wet/dry will post additional info.

Is it sand like or is it film algea type? does the sunlight hit your wet/dry at all? How long has this been set up?
